This is the Sidney Lanier Bridge that spans The
Brunswick River just south of Brunswick. The bridge was constructed from 1995 to
2003 and opened to traffic in 2003. It is one of two large cable stayed bridges
on US 17 in Georgia; the other being the Eugene Tallmadge Bridge in Savannah.
Pictures of the Old Sidney Lanier Bridge for inclusion here would be
appreciated.
Looking south at the bridge. In the left photo, the buildings to
the right are the old B&W manufacturing plant. During World War II, Liberty
Ships were built here by a previous owner. That area will soon be cleared for
something called "Liberty Harbor," an upscale development.
Crossing the bridge heading south. A passenger took these pictures.
Looking across the marsh at the bridge. The boat at the docks is
the Emerald Princess II Dinner Cruise and gambling boat.
Looking north at the Sidney Lanier Bridge from the Downing
Muscgrove Causeway (GA520) which will take you to Jekyll Island.
These next two pictures are not really of the bridge, but in the
same general area or other wise associated. The picture to the left was actually taken about 7 miles away from the bridge on Jekyll Island and the picture on the right was taken while headed southbound on US 17
towards Colonel's Island. Both pictures were taken in April 2007 when the wildfires were burning in Nahunta and Waycross, GA about 30 and 50 miles
respectively from the Sidney Lanier Bridge. The sun was turned a bright shade of orange from passing through the smoke generated by these fires. On the picture to the left, what looks
like clouds is actually smoke.
